There's another exciting new entrant into the world of Gaussian Splatting, OVER. You might be familiar with the Italy based company, whose mission is to create an open, mixed reality Metaverse that merges physical and virtual worlds to create a new dimension where users can augment and enhance their reality.

In an exciting development, OVER has announced a major update to their app, version 1.5.1, with a particular focus on the introduction of Gaussian Splatting, a radiance field method that is set to revolutionize the world of digital mapping.

OVER had most recently been utilizing NeRFs to power their photorealistic outputs, however, starting today, they shifted to Gaussian Splatting.

The most noticeable impact of Gaussian Splatting will be seen in the Mapper and the video previews within the OVER app. Users will experience a more realistic and immersive view of mapped locations, thanks to the enhanced rendering capability of Gaussian Splatting.

"The introduction of Gaussian Splatting introduces a whole new set of opportunities for OVER. Going beyond AR re-localization and enabling the creation of digital twins of the physical world explorable in real-time." Diego Di Tommaso, Co-founder and COO, OVER.Tweet

While Gaussian Splatting is the highlight of the update, OVER has also made other notable changes. The app's main browsing experience has been refined, and users can now choose to view the world map in different modes, including global Experiences, OVER Maps, or a Marketplace view. This customization adds to the user-friendly nature of the app, allowing individuals to navigate the digital world according to their preferences.

Looking ahead, the introduction of Gaussian Splatting is just the beginning of OVER's journey into advanced digital mapping. This technology sets the stage for more immersive and interactive 3D map experiences. Users can expect continuous enhancements and updates, further integrating Gaussian Splatting into various aspects of the app.

In addition to Gaussian Splatting, OVER is also introducing map2earn™️, enabling users to participate in mapping the world in 3D and earn rewards. This feature, set to launch on December 11, complements the Gaussian Splatting update by providing users with a new way to engage with the app and contribute to its growing map database.
