GEN-404

Gaussian Splatting is the first bridge to industry adoption of radiance field representations. Now, with the release of 404—GEN, a text to 3D Unity addon, creators can generate and render 3D Gaussian Splats within Unity in a matter of seconds. This tool, which has just earned recognition as an official Unity Verified Solution, brings ease of use and technical capability to game developers, artists, and hobbyists alike. Unity has been relatively quiet on the Radiance Field front, though the plugin from ArasP has quietly been upticking with PRs.

What is 404—GEN?

404—GEN is a text-to-3D generator that uses Gaussian Splatting to create detailed 3D objects in Unity. Simply enter a short text prompt, and within about a minute, a fully formed asset appears in your scene. Unlike traditional mesh-based workflows, which require complex modeling and optimization, this approach allows for rapid iteration and a unique, organic aesthetic.

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) is a radiance field representation capable of reconstructing or generating lifelike 3D objects and environments. It works by rendering objects as thousands of translucent ellipsoids, or "splats," each carrying key attributes such as color, size, position, and opacity. This results in high-fidelity, photorealistic rendering with minimal computational overhead, without relying on traditional polygonal models.

404—GEN is designed to integrate into Unity, offering a suite of features that make Gaussian Splatting more accessible than ever:

  • Text to 3D in One Minute: Simply type a description, and a high fidelity 3D splat model appears in the scene.

  • Builtin, URP, and HDRP Compatibility: Supports all Unity render pipelines with dedicated scripts to manage color, size, and position.

  • Editing with Cutouts: Allows users to hide parts of a generated object using box or ellipsoid shaped cutouts.

  • Mesh Colliders and Shadows: Enhances realism with lightweight convex hull colliders and shadowcasting capabilities.

  • SplattoMesh Conversion (Upcoming): A future update will introduce mesh conversion, broadening its compatibility with traditional workflows.

One of the best things about 404—GEN is that It's completely free. Unlike many advanced 3D tools, there are no financial barriers, making it accessible for experimentation, prototyping, and creative exploration. The developers believe in a prototype-first approach, meaning while current models may not yet be game-ready, they offer an unparalleled way to iterate, refine, and conceptualize new ideas.

The project is also community-driven. By offering the tool at no cost, the developers encourage real-world feedback and innovation, accelerating research and pushing the technology forward. Additionally, 404—GEN is powered by a decentralized network of users running open-source 3D AI models, all fully licensed for commercial use.

With Gaussian Splatting quickly becoming embraced in the larger industries as a solution for high quality, low cost 3D rendering, tools like 404—GEN represent an exciting way to build toward that future. It is greatly exciting to see Radiance Field representation capabilities continue to be built out within Unity.
