MapTiler has released GeoSplats SDK 1.2.0, which adds clickable annotations to gaussian splatting models on its web maps.
MapTiler opened the GeoSplats beta in June with a JavaScript SDK for georeferencing and streaming splat models over its basemaps and 3D terrain. The SDK ships on npm as @maptiler/geosplats, and MapTiler publishes no changelog for it, so the new capabilities are described in the package's type definitions, README and online API reference.
The new SplatModel.addAnnotation() method pins a label to a model, with an optional single emoji icon, a body color, an HTML popup that opens on click, and arbitrary attached data such as a database row ID. A position given relative to the model's bounding box, with x and z normalized so that 0 is the center and -1 and 1 are its faces, makes the annotation follow the model when it is moved, dragged, rotated or scaled. A position given as longitude and latitude stays fixed on the map when the model moves.
GeoSplats annotations sit on whatever surface lies below them, the model or the terrain, and an optional y value lifts them above it. Resting on the model's surface requires the model to come with a collision mesh. Without one, annotations sit on the terrain even where the model is.
Each annotation fires click, active and inactive events on its model, and can be relabeled, recolored, moved, hidden or removed from code, with its popup opened or closed programmatically. Annotations are removed along with their model.
GeoSplats SDK 1.1.0, released in September, added a setTerrainBlending() method on SplatModel with terrainDisplacement and terrainSmoothness parameters. MapTiler does not document what either parameter controls or its range.
The SDK requires a MapTiler API key, which is free with 100,000 map loads a month, and it is licensed for use only with MapTiler services under the company's JavaScript Module terms. MapTiler has not published separate GeoSplats pricing, and its product page still invites developers to join the beta.
GeoSplats SDK 1.2.1 is available now.
