Meta has expanded access to its Hyperscape platform, making it available for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. Previously, it was only available on the Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Announced at Meta Connect 2024, Hyperscape allows users to step into a given moment in time with hyper-realistic detail in VR and is powered by Radiance Field method, Gaussian Splatting.
Recently, Meta expanded Hyperscape's reach beyond the United States, making it available globally to all regions with access to the Quest Store.
Meta has not yet announced plans to expand the number of available scenes or to allow users to upload their own scenes. Given Meta's likely reliance on a proprietary reconstruction method, it's uncertain whether user-generated content, such as trained .ply files, will be supported in the future.
Considering the success of Meta's Codec Avatar program and the popular Lex Fridman and Mark Zuckerberg interview last year (which also leveraged Radiance Fields), it seems likely that Meta will further develop Hyperscape's scope. One possibility could be the addition of dynamic captures, akin to some demonstrations by the Radiance Field VR company, Gracia.
Meta appears committed to rolling out additional updates and functionality for Hyperscape. The platform remains free to download from the Quest Store.
