One of the reasons I’ve been so captivated by StorySplat is its ability to push the boundaries of storytelling and educational tools using Radiance Fields. With its latest release, Version 1.3, StorySplat has taken another giant leap forward, adding functionality that makes it even more versatile for storytellers and journalists.

Originally created by Sonny Cirasuolo for students at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, StorySplat started as a simple proof of concept and has since grown into a robust platform for creating immersive, scroll-based storytelling experiences. With V1.3, the tool continues to expand its reach and potential.

Since we last profiled StorySplat, there have been several updates and releases, including the ability to now sign in with Google and save up to five experiences.

Version 1.3 Highlights:

  • New UI: A redesigned interface for a more intuitive user experience.

  • Improved Collision Mesh System: Enhances scene navigation and interaction.

  • User Profile and Portfolio Pages: Users can now showcase their work in one place.

  • Version Notes: Built-in notes to track updates and changes easily.

  • Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements: Ensures smoother functionality across the platform.

  • New Example Scenes: Offers inspiration and guidance for creating compelling content.

  • Refactored Codebase: Prepares the platform for Pro Accounts and upcoming features.

  • Debug Mode for Exports: Simplifies troubleshooting during export.

These updates make StorySplat a more comprehensive tool for creating immersive experiences, but Sonny has made it clear that this is just the beginning.

What’s Coming in Version 1.4:

  • Pro Accounts: Unlock advanced features for power users.

    • Analytics on Exported Splats: Gain insights into how your content is used.

    • Remove Watermark: Customize your exports further.

    • Custom Loading Screen and Subdomains: Personalize the experience for your audience.

  • Custom Mesh Uploads for Collision Meshes: Adds more flexibility to scene creation.

  • Refactored Hotspot System: Improved customization for hotspot interactions.

  • Custom Mesh/Image Uploads for Hotspots: Bring unique elements to your scenes.

  • Public Discover Page showcasing splats that have been made public.

Additional Highlights from Recent Updates:

  • Lighting System Updates: Scenes now support light exports for 3D models while keeping splat scenes optimized.

  • Enhanced Export Process: Improved interface and hosting reliability, with exported scenes now hosted by StorySplat’s Babylon servers.

  • Waypoint and UI Enhancements: Includes tooltips, decimal-level spatial sound adjustments, and minimal UI templates for exports.

  • Audio and Collision Fixes: Resolved critical bugs for smoother functionality across devices.

  • User Feedback Integration: Numerous small tweaks based on user input, like fixing CORS policies for local exports and adding a light mode to public profiles.

These improvements further cement StorySplat as a leading tool for immersive storytelling. For anyone looking to explore its capabilities, these new features open the door to even more creative possibilities.
