DJI Terra Gaussian Splatting

DJI has made a decisive move in lifelike 3D reconstruction by adding native Gaussian Splatting support to Terra, its flagship mapping and photogrammetry suite. For anyone working in construction, surveying, infrastructure inspection, or agriculture, this change means that thousands of aerial photos can now turn into radiance fields in a fraction of the time once required for traditional meshes and point clouds. This is the first time we’ve seen Gaussian Splatting land inside a commercially deployed drone based mapping suite from a major player.

Terra is already a staple on job sites, where it converts drone imagery into high precision 2D maps and 3D models. Until now that workflow leaned on classic photogrammetry or LiDAR, both accurate but often slow and compute hungry. DJI’s new 3DGS pipeline keeps the accuracy but trades the wait times for near real time results. In large scale tests Terra rebuilt city block datasets twice as fast as its own mesh engine, handling up to thirty thousand images in a single run. The software only needs four gigabytes of GPU VRAM to get started, although most enterprise customers will pair it with far more powerful hardware.

Gaussian Splatting is a radiance field representation to reconstruct lifelike 3D scenes from multi view images. It excels at representing real world detail without requiring surface reconstruction or meshing, which makes it well suited for the kind of flyover footage that DJI drones routinely capture.

By introducing Gaussian Splatting, DJI is opening the door to real time lifelike 3D visualization from aerial imagery, with results that can be smoother, denser, and significantly more visually realistic than traditional mesh based workflows. Finished splat reconstructions can be exported from Terra in open formats like PLY or Cesium’s B3DM 3D Tiles, ready for drop‑in use across GIS dashboards, game engines and VFX pipelines. A planner can walk a 3D Tiles scene in Cesium, a developer can pipe the same PLY file into Unreal Engine, or to the growing list of other industry standard softwares.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this release isn’t what’s shipping today, but what it sets up for tomorrow. DJI’s enterprise drones are already equipped with powerful onboard processors. As Gaussian Splatting continues to mature, and as more radiance field variants emerge, the prospect of a lifelike 3D world becomes closer to reality.

DJI is the latest large corporation to begin actively supporting a radiance field representation and this trend will continue. Product teams at some of the world’s most influential companies are understanding what the future of imaging might look like and are currently building it.

DJI is offering fresh trials for anyone who tested Terra before 5.0 and wants a second look at the 3DGS workflow. A simple form on the Enterprise site unlocks a time‑limited license alongside the usual purchase channels. For teams already running Terra 4.x, the 5.0 installer drops in place and licenses migrate automatically. Gaussian Splatting support is included in their Flagship and above subscription for Terra, starting at $3700 annually.
