GSOPs 2.0

A few months ago, we introduced the early access version of GSOPs 2.0, a Houdini plugin developed by David Rhodes and Ruben Diaz that captured the attention of the 3DGS content creation and research communities. One of my favorite features is the inclusion of WYSIWYG workflows to manipulate data. Since its Early Access release, GSOPs has empowered creators to prototype, test, and refine their workflows with cutting-edge tools like dynamic 4D Gaussian Splatting and splat manipulation features.

Now, GSOPs is taking another major leap forward: it’s officially available under the Houdini Commercial license, unlocking new opportunities for large-scale commercial adoption.

The 2.0 release builds on the foundation of GSOPs 1.0, combining the power of Houdini's proceduralism with the high fidelity rendering of the Radiance Field method, 3D Gaussian Splatting in a single, streamlined package.

Why This Matters

With the transition to the Houdini Commercial license, GSOPs 2.0 moves beyond being a tool for experimentation and smaller-scale projects. It is now a viable solution for enterprises and production studios seeking powerful, reliable tools for high-end 3D workflows.

Here’s what makes this change significant:

  • Scalable for Teams and Studios: GSOPs can now be integrated into larger pipelines without restrictions, making it ideal for commercial projects requiring collaboration across multiple users.

  • Professional-Grade Features: GSOPs provides the production-ready solutions studios need to push creative boundaries.

  • Seamless Integration: Built to work natively within Houdini, GSOPs is ready to meet the demands of film, gaming, and other industries that require cutting-edge visual effects and asset generation.

A Recap of What GSOPs 2.0 Offers

For those who missed our earlier coverage, here’s a quick refresher on the key features that make GSOPs 2.0 a standout:

  • [UPDATED] gaussian_splats_generate_training_data: Generate synthetic data suitable for training gaussian splat models. Added png image support for Alpha-masked training in Postshot and NerfStudio/Gsplat, as well as COLMAP txt export for improved debugging.

  • [UPDATED] gaussian_splats_transform: Translate, rotate, and scale splats. New and improved user experience and support for splat scaling!

  • [NEW] gaussian_splats_hald_clut: Apply color adjustment to splats based on Hald Color Look-Up Tables.

  • [NEW] GSplat Source: Converts point geometry into "GSplat" primitives, enabling their rendering in the viewport.

The addition of Houdini Commercial licensing represents a milestone for GSOPs, solidifying its role as a versatile, scalable solution for professional-grade projects. Coarse meshing will also be coming soon, with the release of GSOPs 2.1.0 in early 2025.

For creators and organizations ready to explore the potential of GSOPs 2.0 under the Houdini Commercial license, now is the time to dive in and experience the future of 3D development.

To get started with GSOPs 2.0 or to download the plugin, visit their GitHub. Users are also able to get started creating with GSOPs for free with Houdini’s Apprentice license. Please note that while GSOPs is commercially permissible, please take care to make sure that the ply file you are using was also trained with a commercially permissible implementation, such as gsplat or Postshot.
