In what is shaping up to be a busy week for Luma, they have made another major announcement! Today they announced for the first time ever, that NeRF is publicly available in augmented reality.
This represents a massive breakthrough on so many fronts and gives people the ability to showcase their work post capture.
What's more exciting is they are fully aware of the applications of their technology:
"you can teleport back into your memories like you were there again."
Getting to relive moments in time is a huge use case for NeRFs and it's so exciting to see a company acknowledge that path forward. I look to NeRFs as an evolution of modern photography and seeing a NeRF in AR is a inevitable and exciting step to making that reality.
Additionally, this also will be massive for product showcases. For instance, back in early 2022, I showed up to a McLaren dealership offering to NeRF their fleet (because why not) and while they were impressed with NeRFs, the first question I received was: "Can I send a NeRF to a client to allow them to put a car in their garage?" The answer then of course was, no. Perhaps it's time to revisit those conversations and see if I can "borrow" one for the day.
On a smaller scale, it is easy to see how retailers can now begin utilizing NeRFs within their websites, such as how Crate and Barrel has previously been using AR.
This is another super exciting announcement from Luma. Luma AI is available for download on iOS currently, with the new AR feature live.
