About Luma AI

We live in a three dimensional world. Our perception and memories are of three dimensional beings. Yet there is no way to capture and revisit those moments like you are there. All we have to show for it are these 2D slices we call photos. It's time for that to change.

Luma's mission is to enable everyone to capture and experience the world in lifelike 3D. To bring about the next step function change in how we share memories, explore products, and spaces on the internet. To propel photos and videos into our mixed-reality 3D future. Some of the brightest minds in computer vision and graphics have dedicated their careers to solving this problem of photorealistic 3D capture.

Luma AI entered the NeRF world in late 2022, with the launch of its private beta. Luma was quick to expand access and today is available to download on the Apple App Store. On April 10th, 2024, Luma AI launched on Android and the Google Play Store. Since the early days, they have expanded to also offer Gaussian Splatting through their Interactive Scenes, highly stabilized video, Flythroughs, and Generative AI platform, Genie.

It’s difficult to make an argument that any other platform has lowered the entry barrier to Radiance Fields more than Luma.

The Luma team has been hard at work introducing clamored for features such as Unreal Engine plugins, Augmented Reality, and embeddable NeRFs.

In mid 2024, Luma AI unveiled the next chapter of their business, the generative Dream Machine. This new research preview is a text or image to video model that generates content. They have been quick to release updates to Dream Machine, bringing extension capabilities, keyframing, and Loops. At this point it is unknown whether the Luma AI team will continue development on 3D capture. While Luma CEO, Amit Jain, has stated that 3D capture will continue to be offered, it is unlikely that the team is actively still working on it.

Luma’s mission is to enable everyone to capture and experience the world in lifelike 3D. To bring about the next step function change in how we share memories, explore products, and spaces on the internet. To propel photos and videos into our mixed-reality 3D future.

Luma AI has raised $68.5M to date publicly.

Values

  1. Value velocity and execution.

  2. Communicate clearly.

  3. Focus on building what will matter to users and the product.

  4. Be resourceful at finding creative ways to overcome challenges.

Vision

  1. We believe that multimodality is critical for intelligence. To go beyond language models and build more aware, capable and useful systems, the next step function change will come from vision. So, we are working on training and scaling up multimodal foundation models for systems that can see and understand, show and explain, and eventually interact with our world to effect change.

  2. We will deploy these systems to make a new kind of intelligent creative partner that can imagine with us. Free and away from the pressure of being creative. It's for all of us whose imaginations have been constrained, who've had to channel vivid dreams through broken words, hoping others will see what we see in our mind's eye. A partner that can help us show — not just tell.
