Structure from Motion (SfM) is a technique used to create 3D models from 2D images. By analyzing overlapping photos taken from different angles, SfM reconstructs the geometry of objects or environments in three dimensions. It's a powerful tool for capturing real-world spaces and objects, used in industries like architecture, film, and archaeology.

RealityCapture, developed by Capturing Reality and owned by Epic Games, is a photogrammetry software that processes SfM. Known for its speed and precision, RealityCapture processes images to produce data that 3D reconstruction pipelines such as Nerfstudio and Postshot can handle. Traditionally, it has been widely used by professionals in fields like gaming, visual effects, and geospatial analysis for Photogrammetry.

However, with the introduction of V1.5, RealityCapture has begun allowing for Radiance Field and COLMAP exporting.

Why Choose SfM?
SfM is mandatory in almost all currently available Radiance Field reconstruction pipelines. A lot of platforms have their own internal SfM pipeline, though some users prefer to go with their software of choice and then import the SfM data. RealityCapture is one of the industry leaders in this respect and is known for its accurate camera and swift pose generations.

Key Features of RealityCapture

  • Ease of Use: Intuitive workflows that allow users to generate 3D models from photos or scans quickly.

  • High-Quality Outputs: Generate detailed meshes, orthophotos, and georeferenced maps with industry-leading accuracy.

  • Versatility: Supports data from various sources, including drones, cameras, and LiDAR.

Who Should Use RealityCapture?
RealityCapture is ideal for:

  • Non-technical users: An intuitive interface makes it approachable for beginners and hobbyists.

  • Professionals: Architects, engineers, and digital artists can leverage its precision for complex projects.

  • Researchers and educators: Useful for documenting artifacts, visualizing environments, or teaching 3D modeling techniques.

RealityCapture can be downloaded from their website or the EpicGames Launcher. As of April 2024, RealityCapture is free to use for both individuals and small companies who are making under $1M a year in revenue. For users who exceed that threshold will need to purchase a seat to use the platform.
