Trimble supplies the survey grade reality capture hardware that anchors hybrid Gaussian splatting and LiDAR workflows, most notably the Trimble X12 laser scanner at plus or minus 2 mm accuracy and 2.19 million points per second, and it reaches gaussian splatting on the software side through SketchUp.

The Gaussian Splats extension for SketchUp is published free on the Extension Warehouse and has passed 5,900 installs. It imports .ply, .splat and .spz files and provides viewing and scene management inside a SketchUp model, and Trimble's own documentation states that the extension focuses on visualizing and manipulating splat files. Creating the splat requires a third party tool, and Trimble's help pages point users at Scaniverse for on-device .spz capture on iOS and Android, and at Polycam for LiDAR and photogrammetry based capture exporting to .ply. Trimble notes that these applications are external and not officially endorsed or supported.

The extension began in SketchUp Labs in June 2026. Separately, splats reach SketchUp through Chaos V-Ray 7, which is a rendering route rather than a native import.
