Arcturus Vision Opens Orders for a $149 Steam Frame Passthrough Camera

Arcturus Vision has opened orders for the Arcturus Vision Camera, a $149 stereo passthrough and capture module for Valve's Steam Frame. Excitedly, the camera also supports gaussian splatting. Capturing splats from a headset is not a new concept, most notably known from Meta's Hyperscape and SplataraScan.
The module carries two 32 megapixel Sony RGB sensors spaced 64 mm apart, matching a typical human interpupillary distance, weighs under 10 g, and attaches through the headset's front expansion port. Recording runs at 5K, 2464x2464 per eye, up to 60 fps, or at 2.5K, 1232x1232 per eye, up to 120 fps.
Passthrough reaches up to 72 Hz at 5K and up to 144 Hz at 2.5K, and Arcturus Vision states that passthrough runs at 60 fps by default with 72 to 144 fps requiring a special configuration. The camera covers a 125 by 105 degree binocular field of view, records 10-bit HDR in HLG, and focuses from 30 cm to infinity. It is certified Steam Frame Compatible.
Arcturus Vision has also listed Gaussian XR on Steam, a free to play native Steam Frame viewer for 3D gaussian splats with a planned release date of September 2026. The Steam listing states that the app is not yet available and offers a wishlist. Arcturus first showed a CUDA splatting engine in November 2023, training to 7,000 steps in 68 seconds inside 5 GB of VRAM.
Gaussian XR carries eight example scenes captured with the camera on Steam Frame, among them a house on Lake Michigan and a house at several stages of construction. The reconstructions look amazing. The app discovers PLY and SOG files placed in a GaussianXR folder in Documents on the headset, and scenes can be rescaled and examined as miniatures. The listing gives Arm64, 317 MB of storage, and VR only operation.
Arcturus Vision lists free standard shipping, a one year limited warranty, 14 day returns, and free cancellation before September 20. A capture shot on the headset can be reconstructed in any splatting software and returned to the same headset as a file drop.
