FreeGaussian has rebuilt the 3D viewer that opens every gaussian splatting scene it processes, adding human-scale walking, a mesh mode, and distance measurement.
Human-scale walking depends on metric scale. FreeGaussian began training scenes directly from raw Insta360 .insv files this month, using the camera's motion sensors to recover true size. In those scenes the viewer sets eye height at 1.65 m and walking pace at 1.4 m/s, and follows floors, ramps and stairs. Walls and furniture stop the camera, which slides along them, while obstacles under 50 cm are stepped over. Collisions can be switched off, and one button cycles between 0.5x, 1x and 2x speed. Each visit opens at the most open view near the start of the capture, level with the horizon.
The textured mesh that already ships with every FreeGaussian scene can now be shown in the viewer as a wireframe or with its photographic textures. Metric scenes can also display a 1 m floor grid, and a capture path overlay draws the camera operator's route, colored from start to end, with the position of every shot.
Measurements are taken by clicking two points, and either end can be dragged to refine the distance. Each measure lands in a list for selection or deletion, and a measure hidden behind an object turns dashed. FreeGaussian's own example reads a courtyard gate at 4.33 m wide and 2.95 m tall.
Auto quality renders at full definition when the camera is still, lightens rendering during movement, and drops Gaussians on devices that struggle. Four manual levels run from Low to Ultra, and the update fixes an iPhone Safari issue that could leave previously visited scenes black.
Scene owners and admins get an Edit mode that moves, rotates and scales the scene with a 3D gizmo or exact X, Y and Z values, and sets the starting view, with changes saved for every visitor. A read-only embed drops the editing tools for websites, listings and portfolios. FreeGaussian recommends raw .insv footage from the Insta360 X6 or X5 for metric scale, walking and measurement.
The new FreeGaussian viewer is available now.
