FreeGaussian has rebuilt its hosted gaussian splatting pipeline around raw Insta360 .insv files, reconstructing directly from the camera's two original fisheye images.
The alternative for an Insta360 capture is an equirectangular .mp4 exported from Insta360 Studio, with both lenses stitched into one panorama. FreeGaussian says the stitching error along that panorama's seam changes from frame to frame, which the reconstruction turns into blur, floaters and warped surfaces. The export also usually drops the motion data the camera recorded.
A single .insv clip carries both lens images plus gyroscope and accelerometer readings. FreeGaussian uses that IMU data to find gravity, so floors come out flat and walls vertical, and to output each scene at metric scale. Loop closures are now validated more strictly when a capture path returns to a place it has already seen, which the company says reduces drift on long walks and multiroom captures. Dropping the stitching step makes processing what FreeGaussian calls much faster, though it gives no figure.
Varjo added .insv upload to Teleport in August, with Teleport stitching the footage on its side, and 360 Splat Pro 1.3.0 aligns raw fisheye footage through COLMAP's fisheye solver.
Every processed FreeGaussian scene, from any source, now also includes a textured mesh in the output .zip as model.glb, model.usdz and a mesh_textured_0.png texture atlas. FreeGaussian reconstructs the walkable floor as a continuous plane so wheel and foot contacts stay stable in a physics engine, and names MuJoCo and NVIDIA Isaac Sim as targets. A mesh built from an .insv inherits the leveling and metric scale, and FreeGaussian pitches it for training and testing robot navigation in the actual office, warehouse or home where a robot will work. Meshes from other sources may need to be scaled and leveled by hand.
The equirectangular .mp4 path is unchanged and remains the route for other 360 cameras, without IMU leveling or automatic scale. FreeGaussian is a project of OVER the Reality. Its FAQ says the pipeline supports Insta360 cameras that record .insv files, citing the X5 as an example, and the fisheye pipeline and mesh output both apply on free and paid plans. FreeGaussian does not publish a full camera list, processing times or paid plan pricing.
The FreeGaussian .insv pipeline is available now.
