Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous vehicle ecosystem. Our mission is to build a high-velocity, multidisciplinary team focused on transforming real-world operations into high-quality datasets for autonomous driving partners.

AV Labs is tackling one of the industry's biggest challenges: unlocking rare, real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomous driving has become a data race, and Uber has a unique advantage. Millions of Uber trips occur every hour across diverse cities, road conditions, and edge cases, generating the large-scale, real-world data that autonomous systems need.

By leveraging this unmatched scale, AV Labs is building the platforms that will redefine how autonomous vehicles are trained and, ultimately, how the world moves.

As a Machine Learning Engineer on AV Labs, you will conduct frontier research for autonomous vehicles. You will formulate novel research problems, develop state-of-the-art machine learning models, and influence the future of autonomous driving through strong scientific judgment and technical execution. You'll collaborate closely with researchers and engineers across AV Labs and partner engineering organizations.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for autonomous vehicle research.

  • Lead the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle, including:

    • Data pipelines

    • Model training

    • Evaluation

    • Deployment

    • Production monitoring

  • Architect scalable machine learning systems across upstream and downstream dependencies.

  • Provide technical leadership through:

    • Design reviews

    • Engineering mentorship

    • Hands-on technical execution

  • Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams across AV Labs.

  • Publish and present original research at leading computer vision and machine learning conferences.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field, or an MS with equivalent industry experience.

  • 3+ years of industry experience in autonomous vehicles, computer vision, or a closely related field.

  • Strong understanding of applying cutting-edge machine learning techniques to scalable autonomous driving systems.

  • Demonstrated technical impact through publications at leading conferences such as:

    • CVPR

    • ICCV

    • ICLR

    • NeurIPS

    • or equivalent technical contributions

  • Proficiency in Python and modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

  • Excellent communication skills and experience providing technical leadership through mentoring, design reviews, and cross-functional collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Autonomous vehicle research.

  • Training multimodal large language models (LLMs) for autonomous driving or advanced computer vision applications.

  • Published research in areas such as:

    • 3D perception and scene understanding

    • Multimodal embeddings

    • Diffusion models

    • Gaussian Splatting

    • Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models

    • World models

Compensation

Location: Sunnyvale, California

Base Salary: $202,000 – $224,000 USD

Final compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
