Another day, another big upgrade to StorySplat. This latest release continues to push the platform forward—not just in terms of new features, but in performance, polish, and visual fidelity. From animated camera FOV to embedded video and GIF support, the platform is stepping deeper into interactive media territory in a way that feels fluid, flexible, and creator-friendly.
One of the most exciting additions is support for video and GIFs inside hotspots, making it possible to embed dynamic content directly into scenes. This could mean showcasing a clip, adding atmospheric loops, or layering in an animated explanation, it opens up a whole new dimension of storytelling inside StorySplat experiences. These new media types behave just like any other hotspot element—clickable, responsive, and easy to drop in.
Another subtle but powerful change is the new field of view control for waypoints, which lets creators animate the camera’s zoom level as it moves through a scene. Combined with existing waypoint controls, it gives creators a lot more flexibility in how their story flows.
Performance wise, WebGPU support has been introduced for browsers that support it. This brings improved rendering speed and smoother performance in complex scenes, especially those with high resolution splats or dynamic effects. It’s still an experimental toggle in the export settings, so if you run into issues, you can switch it off. But for supported systems, the benefits are already noticeable.
Behind the scenes, there have been some technical improvements that further polish the platform. Spherical Harmonics rendering has been refined for .spz
files, resulting in better lighting accuracy and fidelity. Login screens have gotten a visual tune up, and a new Account Page now lets you view thumbnails of all your saved splats in one place, making it much easier to manage projects and revisit past work.
Also worth noting: .ply
files now automatically convert to Niantic's .spz
on upload.
It’s another solid update from Sonny at StorySplat. If you haven’t played around with the new features yet, now’s the perfect time to jump back in for the free to use StorySplat.
