AMD has signed a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.
The deal has not closed. AMD expects it to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to AMD CEO Lisa Su. According to World Labs, Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will work with Li to continue leading the World Labs team inside AMD.
AMD was already an investor. It took part in the $1 billion round World Labs announced in February, alongside NVIDIA and Autodesk. World Labs says the two companies began a technical partnership last year, starting with model training and inference optimization on AMD GPUs.
World Labs has built its products around gaussian splatting. Marble launched in November 2025 with world exports of up to 2 million splats as .ply or .spz files, and the World API opened Marble generation to developers in January. Atlas, announced on September 1, reconstructs scenes as Gaussian splats and is in early access. The company also maintains Spark, an MIT licensed splat renderer for three.js whose 2.0 preview introduced level of detail and streaming.
Neither the AMD release nor the World Labs post says what happens to Marble, Atlas, the World API or Spark after the deal closes. AMD describes World Labs as developing models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image and video inputs.
"Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving," said Lisa Su. Li said joining AMD "will give our team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate our research and help define the infrastructure needed for the next era of AI." Both companies frame the combination around an open AI ecosystem, which World Labs describes as spanning hardware, software, platforms and widely accessible open models.
