Verkare has released Krill 0.12.0 into closed beta, a Rhino 8 plugin that imports 3D Gaussian splat scans as native Rhino block instances. A scan arrives from a .ply file, is placed as a Krill block, and answers to layers, hide and isolate, undo, block editing and Grasshopper the way any other block does. Krill draws the splats with its own GPU pipeline, compositing into the Rhino viewport through a display conduit with per-pixel depth.

Veesus added Rhino support for 3DGS in May 2025, and RhinoGaussianSplatting arrived in July 2026 as a free MIT licensed plugin covering import, editing, meshing and baking. Krill is a separate closed beta project from Benjamin, an architect in Gothenburg.

Cut and crop volumes trim a scan live against Rhino geometry, and Rhino's native clipping planes work on splats as well. Point osnap snaps the cursor to splat centres, so measurements are taken on the scan itself. Rhino solids occlude splats and transparent objects tint them, and splats draw in screen captures and prints.

Inside a block edit, stray splats and capture noise can be deleted non-destructively, and the deletions survive save and reopen and can be restored at any time. Color grading applies per placement, per block, or globally. A trimmed and repositioned scan exports back out to .ply. Everything runs locally and nothing is uploaded.

Large scans build a level of detail pyramid on first import. Verkare's demo recording shows about a hundred buildings at roughly six million splats each, around 600 million splats in total, on a single GeForce RTX 5060 Ti with 16 GB. Verkare states that Intel graphics are untested and that very large scans placed many times can exhaust 8 GB of graphics memory.

Version 0.12.0 adds a splat size range slider inside splat edit, showing the block's size distribution and committing a live previewed deletion as one undoable step. Per viewport visibility now works for block local cut and crop volumes, a Duplicate definition item appears on the Krill block context menu, and double clicking a block enters block edit. A load time compatibility failure was fixed, so Krill now loads in Rhino 9 BETA, where Verkare states the default Direct3D display is unsupported and OpenGL must be selected.

Krill 0.12.0 is on the Rhino Package Manager, locked behind an access code during the closed beta and limited to Rhino 8 on Windows. Access codes are requested from krill@verkare.com.
