SuperSplat has rolled out its latest 1.8 update for the 3DGS editor, bringing a host of new features that enhance usability and expand creative possibilities for users.

One of the key highlights of this update is the introduction of Orthographic view support. Users can now switch to orthographic mode by selecting one of the axis-aligned views, which then automatically snaps back to perspective mode when the camera is orbited. This addition provides more flexibility for users who need accurate orthogonal perspectives during their 3D editing workflows.

The update also introduces a convenient "Save a Screenshot" feature. This tool allows users to export a PNG of the current view, using lodpng for compression to ensure image quality, particularly with transparency. This capability paves the way for more advanced visual content creation, such as camera keyframes and flythrough animations directly within the 3DGS editor—a highly valuable feature given the extended training times in tools like Luma.

For added customization, users can now set the background to a specific color or choose to save without a background, removing editing visuals such as grids and bounding boxes. This flexibility enhances the utility of the screenshot feature, making it easier to produce polished visuals.

Another notable addition is the viewer app export feature. Users can now export a simple web viewer, which is built using PlayCanvas's web components and packaged into a zipped folder for easy use. This viewer comprises an HTML file, a camera controller, and the 3D splat file in compressed PLY format. This initial implementation hints at further export options to come, including support for AR mode, different camera types (such as first-person and orbit camera), and additional compression preferences.

Additionally, SuperSplat's engine has been upgraded to PlayCanvas 2.2, continuing the team's efforts to future-proof the editor and integrate modern technologies like WebGPU. Notably, this update also resolves previous issues with spherical harmonics support that emerged during the transition to version 2 of the engine.

SuperSplat is available for free and welcomes contributions through pull requests or issues on GitHub. Check out the latest version here.
