FreeGaussian is a browser service from OVER the Reality that trains Gaussian splats and sim-ready meshes from 360 video, raw Insta360 files and photos.

Platform

Web service in the browser with nothing to install. Insta360 X4, X5 and X6 .insv files upload directly, and other 360 cameras export a stitched equirectangular .mp4

GPU

None published. Reconstruction runs on FreeGaussian's servers, so no local GPU is needed to process a scene. The browser viewer renders splats on the viewer's device, which implies a WebGL2 class GPU

Pricing

Free tier with no credit card needed. Paid plans exist, but FreeGaussian publishes no paid pricing or plan limits

Turning 360 camera footage into Gaussian splats and metric-scale meshes without local hardware

Updated

July 2026

FreeGaussian is a hosted Gaussian splatting service from OVER the Reality that turns 360 video, ordinary .mp4 video and photos into explorable 3D scenes. A user uploads footage in the browser, FreeGaussian runs the reconstruction on its own servers and emails when the scene is ready, so nothing is installed locally.

Raw Insta360 .insv files are the recommended input. FreeGaussian rebuilt its pipeline around them, reconstructing from the camera's two original fisheye images instead of a stitched panorama and using the clip's gyroscope and accelerometer data to level each scene and output it at metric scale. The Insta360 X4, X5 and X6 upload straight from the SD card. Other 360 cameras, including the Insta360 X3, Ricoh Theta X and Z1, GoPro Max 2, DJI Osmo 360 and Antigravity A1, go through a stitched equirectangular .mp4 exported with direction lock on, without automatic leveling or scale. People in the footage are masked out, which leaves holes where they stood.

Each processed scene arrives as a .zip holding the Gaussian splat as .ply and .splat, a dense colored point cloud, camera poses, a sparse reconstruction, a flythrough video and a textured mesh as model.glb and model.usdz. The mesh reconstructs the walkable floor as a continuous plane for physics engines, and FreeGaussian names MuJoCo and NVIDIA Isaac Sim as targets alongside Blender, Unity, Unreal and AR on iPhone. FreeGaussian's rebuilt browser viewer walks a visitor through metric scenes at an eye height of 1.65 m and a pace of 1.4 m/s, following floors, ramps and stairs and sliding along walls and furniture. The viewer can show the textured mesh as a wireframe or with its photographic textures, overlay a 1 m floor grid and the capture path, and measure the distance between two clicked points. Scene owners get an Edit mode that moves, rotates and scales the scene and sets the starting view, and a read only embed drops the editing tools for websites, listings and portfolios.

FreeGaussian offers a free tier with no credit card required, and the .insv pipeline and mesh output apply on both free and paid plans. It publishes no paid plan pricing, processing times or full camera list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FreeGaussian free?

FreeGaussian offers a free tier that needs no credit card, and its raw .insv pipeline and mesh output are available on both free and paid plans. FreeGaussian does not publish pricing for its paid plans.

Which cameras work with FreeGaussian?

FreeGaussian recommends the Insta360 X4, X5 and X6, whose raw .insv files upload directly and come out level and at metric scale. Other 360 cameras, such as the Ricoh Theta X, GoPro Max 2 and DJI Osmo 360, work through a stitched equirectangular .mp4 exported with direction lock on.

What does FreeGaussian output?

FreeGaussian delivers each scene as a .zip containing the Gaussian splat in .ply and .splat, a textured mesh in .glb and .usdz, a dense point cloud, camera poses and a flythrough video, along with an online viewer link.

Does FreeGaussian need a GPU?

FreeGaussian runs reconstruction on its own servers, so no local GPU is needed to train a scene. Viewing a finished scene happens in the browser on the visitor's own device.

Can you measure distances in FreeGaussian scenes?

FreeGaussian's browser viewer measures the distance between two clicked points in metric scenes, and either end can be dragged to refine it. FreeGaussian recommends raw .insv footage from the Insta360 X6 or X5 for metric scale, walking and measurement.
