Warpgate Labs publishes RSR, a native Windows Direct3D 12 and OpenXR viewer for 3D Gaussian Splatting, and Gauss Cannon, a GPL-3.0 Blender add-on that turns Blender scenes into splat training data.

Location

United States

Platform

Desktop app (Windows 10 and 11, x64) with OpenXR VR. Blender add-on for Blender 4.2.0 or later

GPU

DirectX 12 capable GPU for RSR on Windows 10 or 11. An NVIDIA RTX GPU is optional and needed only for DLSS Super Resolution. Gauss Cannon runs inside Blender, so it needs whatever the chosen Blender render engine needs

Pricing

RSR is free for personal and non-commercial use, with a separate commercial licence on request. Gauss Cannon is free

Warpgate Labs builds tools for 3D Gaussian Splatting under the warpgatelabs organization on GitHub, which describes its focus as rendering, capture and pipeline software for real-time and immersive applications. Its two public GitHub projects are RSR, short for Rapid Splat Renderer, and the Blender add-on Gauss Cannon.

RSR is a native Windows application written in C++ against Direct3D 12 that talks to headsets directly through OpenXR, so SteamVR, Oculus and other OpenXR runtimes work without an engine, a project or an import step. It loads standard binary PLY files and PlayCanvas SOG files, decodes spherical harmonics up to order 3, and sorts splats with a GPU radix sort that never round-trips to the CPU. On NVIDIA RTX cards it can layer on DLSS Super Resolution, including DLAA, and since 0.8.0 DLSS upscales each eye independently in VR.

Warpgate Labs released RSR on GitHub with v0.6.0 and v0.7.0 on April 12 and 13, 2026, the second adding compressed PLY support and better initial framing for scenes with outlier splats. Version 0.8.0 on May 12 overhauled VR with grip-to-grab, two-handed pinch scaling and a companion window for controller bindings and DLSS settings. RSR 0.9.0 on May 27 rewrote the rendering pipeline, lifting a 5.99M splat 4K test scene from about 80 FPS to about 143 FPS, and added WASD fly-cam controls, a frustum freeze for inspecting culling and a Low, Medium and High splat quality setting.

RSR is distributed as a compiled binary in zip form from the RSR releases page, with no source code. It launches into a file browser or opens a scene passed on the command line, and arrow keys or VR controller buttons step through every scene in a folder with buffered background loading. Its end user licence allows free personal, educational, research and evaluation use, and any commercial use, including client work and paid exhibitions, needs a separate written licence.

Gauss Cannon, maintained by Arash Keshmirian, places synthetic cameras on the faces of a template mesh in Blender, skips cameras that would sit inside geometry, and exports rendered images, camera data and coloured PLY point clouds in formats for LichtFeld Studio and Postshot. It is GPL-3.0, requires Blender 4.2.0 or later and has its own profile at Gauss Cannon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RSR from Warpgate Labs?

RSR, or Rapid Splat Renderer, is a native Windows viewer for 3D Gaussian Splatting from Warpgate Labs, built in C++ on Direct3D 12 with OpenXR VR support. RSR loads PLY and PlayCanvas SOG files, renders spherical harmonics up to order 3 and sorts splats with a GPU radix sort.

What hardware does RSR need?

RSR needs Windows 10 or 11 on x64 and a DirectX 12 capable GPU. An OpenXR compatible headset is optional for VR, and an NVIDIA RTX GPU is optional and only required for DLSS Super Resolution.

Is RSR free and open source?

RSR is free for personal, educational, research and other non-commercial use under its end user licence, but it is not open source. RSR ships as a compiled binary, and commercial use requires a separate written licence.

What else does Warpgate Labs make?

Warpgate Labs also publishes Gauss Cannon, a GPL-3.0 Blender add-on that automates camera placement and point cloud export to produce Gaussian Splatting training data from Blender scenes.

What are the alternatives to RSR?

Alternatives to RSR for viewing Gaussian Splats on a desktop include Brush, LichtFeld Studio and SuperSplat, which are open source, while RSR is a closed-source native Windows viewer focused on frame rate and PC VR.
