GreenValley International has announced the LiGrip O2, its new flagship handheld SLAM LiDAR scanner and this time, Gaussian Splatting is at the center of the system’s output. Alongside traditional LAS outputs, the device natively exports Gaussian Splatting reconstructions in both .lisplat
and .ply
formats.
By pairing its LiDAR with five cameras (three panoramic for full color coverage, two visual SLAM cameras for stability), the system records scenes with all the richness needed for photorealistic splat based reconstruction.
The dual VSLAM cameras help stabilize reconstructions even in feature poor spaces like underground mines or long corridors, settings where splat pipelines can run into trouble. Like the XGRIDS system, data is captured by moving through a space. For industries like construction, mining, forestry, and cultural heritage preservation, this makes the jump from field scanning to real time immersive 3D far smoother.
In practice, it means a scan session can deliver outputs that are immediately usable in visualization tools, simulation pipelines, or even real-time engines experimenting with splat rendering. Surveyors may still rely on the LAS outputs, but for researchers, filmmakers, and digital twin creators, the native .lisplat
and ply export is needed.
At 2.2 kilograms with battery, the LiGrip O2 is a bit heavier than the PortalCam, but still meant to be carried into the field for hours of capture, with hot-swappable batteries extending runtime as needed. It’s IP64 rated, modular (backpack and telescopic pole kits available), and controlled through a streamlined app interface.
This is the latest handheld device specializing in large scale and rapid data collection for gaussian splatting, following XGRIDS recent release of the PortalCam. The continuation of hardware based excitement around gaussian splatting is a positive indicator that capturing the world in lifelike 3D is very much on people's minds. While there is no public pricing available yet, the LiGrip O2 certainly faces a tough challenge with the upgraded and more cost effective PortalCam.
