Survey grade terrestrial and mobile laser scanning for AEC, geospatial and public safety, with Gaussian splats as a Rovi i.1 deliverable

FARO Technologies is a 3D measurement and imaging company founded in 1981 and headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. AMETEK agreed on May 6, 2025 to buy it for $44 per share in cash, an enterprise value of about $920 million, and completed the acquisition on July 21, 2025, placing FARO in its Ultra Precision Technologies Division alongside Creaform and Virtek. On January 13, 2026 FARO reorganized into two business units. FARO CREAFORM combines the FARO 3D Measurement segment with Creaform for manufacturing metrology, and FARO INSIGHT, headquartered in Korntal-Münchingen in Germany, runs the reality capture business for construction, geospatial and public safety work.
FARO INSIGHT builds terrestrial, mobile and imaging laser scanners. The Focus terrestrial line runs from Focus Core, with a 100 meter range and up to 2 mm accuracy, through Focus Premium at 200 meters and Focus Premium Max at 400 meters. Focus i.1 and Focus i.1 X were introduced on September 15, 2026 with object accuracy up to 0.9 mm and colorized capture in about 20 seconds using Flash technology, and the i.1 X adds a mountable GNSS and RTK receiver and a 400 meter range. The Orbis mobile scanner pairs the GeoSLAM SLAM algorithm with Flash stationary scans of about 15 seconds, and the Blink imaging laser scanner captures 50 megapixel imagery with up to 4 mm accuracy.
Rovi i.1 is the FARO product built around Gaussian splats. FARO INSIGHT introduced it on September 15, 2026 in partnership with Manifold Tech, a 3D spatial intelligence technology company, as a walk-and-scan device that uses hybrid visual and LiDAR SLAM. The Rovi i.1 product page lists Gaussian splats among its deliverables alongside floorplans, room measurements, volumetric analysis and as-built documentation, and real-time preview lets an operator check coverage before leaving site. The Rovi i.1 tech sheet gives 200,000 points per second, 1.24 kg with handle and battery, 256 GB of storage, about two hours of typical battery life, a range of 40 m at 10 percent reflectivity and 70 m at 80 percent, and 8 mm accuracy measured against 26 known reference points across a 250 square meter area. An optional accessory kit adds an RTK and GNSS unit, a HighRes PanoCam, a close-up camera and a monopod holder.
FARO Sphere XG is the cloud platform that ties the hardware together. It runs in a web browser, aligns point clouds and 360 degree photos to floorplans and 3D models over time for 4D progress tracking, and takes pre-registered Orbis and Blink data from the FARO Stream mobile app. Rovi i.1 captures are uploaded to Sphere XG and processed in the cloud, so FARO says no dedicated workstation or graphics card is needed to work with them. SCENE is the Windows 11 desktop application for registration, cleaning and analysis, with interactive and hybrid registration and a SteamVR headset view, and it requires a dedicated NVIDIA GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM. FARO has announced SCENE 2027 with faster point cloud generation on large projects and an AI filter for glass and mirror reflections.
FARO does not publish prices for Rovi i.1. The device is bought together with a minimum three year software subscription, Scan Essential with one full Sphere XG and SCENE user, 1 TB of storage and 4,000 annual tokens, Scan Professional with three users, 2 TB and 12,000 tokens, or Scan Enterprise with five users, 4 TB and 24,000 tokens. The buyer owns the Rovi i.1 hardware and can renew the subscription when the three year term ends. Focus scanners also connect to Sphere XG and SCENE through a subscription model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does FARO support Gaussian splatting?
FARO lists Gaussian splats among the deliverables of Rovi i.1, its walk-and-scan reality capture package introduced on September 15, 2026, with processing in the FARO Sphere XG cloud platform. The FARO product pages for Focus, Orbis, Blink, Sphere XG and SCENE do not mention Gaussian splats as of October 2026.
What is FARO Rovi i.1?
FARO Rovi i.1 is a handheld walk-and-scan device using hybrid visual and LiDAR SLAM, developed by FARO INSIGHT with Manifold Tech and offered as a package with FARO Sphere XG and SCENE software. The Rovi i.1 tech sheet gives 200,000 points per second, 1.24 kg, 256 GB of storage and 8 mm accuracy against 26 reference points over 250 square meters.
Who owns FARO?
FARO is owned by AMETEK, which completed its acquisition of FARO Technologies on July 21, 2025 at $44 per share. Since January 2026 the FARO reality capture business has operated as FARO INSIGHT, headquartered in Korntal-Münchingen, Germany, and the metrology business as FARO CREAFORM.
What GPU does FARO SCENE need?
FARO SCENE requires Windows 11 and a dedicated NVIDIA GPU with OpenGL 4.3 or later, DirectX 11 and at least 4 GB of VRAM for about 10 scans, rising to 8 GB for about 100 scans and 32 GB for about 1,000. Rovi i.1 data processed in FARO Sphere XG runs in the cloud and needs no local graphics card.
How much does FARO Rovi i.1 cost?
FARO does not publish a price for Rovi i.1. Rovi i.1 is bought with a minimum three year subscription in one of three tiers, Scan Essential, Scan Professional or Scan Enterprise, which differ in Sphere XG and SCENE users, cloud storage from 1 TB to 4 TB, and annual processing tokens from 4,000 to 24,000.
