Scanning a room on a Quest headset and revisiting it in VR

Meta's radiance field work runs along two separate lines, a consumer capture app on Quest and a developer facing rendering feature in its Spatial SDK. Meta showed Horizon Hyperscape at Connect in September 2024, put prebuilt demo scenes on Quest 2 and Quest Pro that November, and released the capture app itself on September 17 2025 alongside the Meta Horizon Engine.

Meta Horizon Hyperscape Capture is a free Quest 3 and Quest 3S app that is still labelled Beta and still distributed through Early Access, at version 17.0.0.1.262 and 413.79 MB, published by Meta and developed by Facebook VR. A user scans a room in a few minutes on the headset, reconstruction runs on Meta servers and takes hours, and the finished space is explored in VR. The app requires an internet connection because nothing is reconstructed or stored locally, it is single user across sitting, standing and roomscale, it runs on Touch controllers, and Meta restricts it to users 18 and over. The store listing describes the output as an immersive true to life digital replica and never names the representation it uses.

Sharing has moved backwards rather than forwards. Captures became shareable and explorable in November 2025 and Meta added further demo scenes that December, but on March 24 2026 the route that published a capture as a Horizon World was removed and existing captures were migrated into the standalone app. The store listing now states that worlds a user captures remain only for their private viewing. There is no file export, so a Hyperscape capture cannot leave Meta's cloud.

Separately from Hyperscape, Meta documents a first party Gaussian splat feature in the Meta Spatial SDK, which it classifies as experimental. The feature loads and positions splats in a scene through a Splat component and a registered SplatFeature, and Meta's documentation for it was last updated on November 10 2025. It runs only on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, renders one splat at a time, and accepts only .ply and .spz files. Meta advises staying under 150,000 splats for performance, notes that large splats load slowly enough to warrant loading UI, and warns that hit detection varies with splat opacity and clustering. A SupportsLocomotion component is attached to the splat entity for navigating larger environments.

Quest is also a playback target for splat work Meta does not build. OpenQuestCapture brought open source capture to Quest 3 and 3S in December 2025, SplataraScan arrived on SideQuest in April 2026, and Niantic ships Into the Scaniverse on the Horizon Store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Meta Hyperscape Capture use Gaussian splatting?

Meta's store listing for Hyperscape Capture does not name the representation the app uses, and describes the output only as a digital replica. Meta does document a Gaussian splat feature separately, in the Meta Spatial SDK, which renders .ply and .spz files on Quest 3 and Quest 3S.

What headsets run Meta Hyperscape Capture?

Meta Hyperscape Capture runs on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S only, and Meta restricts it to users 18 and over. Quest 2 and Quest Pro received prebuilt demo scenes in November 2024 but cannot capture.

Can Meta Hyperscape captures be shared or exported?

No. Meta removed the route that published a Hyperscape capture as a Horizon World on March 24 2026 and migrated existing captures into the standalone app, and the store listing now states that captured worlds remain only for private viewing. There is no file export.

How much does Meta Hyperscape Capture cost?

Meta Hyperscape Capture is free. It is an Early Access Beta title at version 17.0.0.1.262, needs 413.79 MB of storage, and requires an internet connection because reconstruction runs on Meta servers rather than on the headset.

What are the limits on Gaussian splats in the Meta Spatial SDK?

The Meta Spatial SDK splat feature is experimental and runs only on Quest 3 and Quest 3S. It renders one splat at a time, accepts only .ply and .spz files, and Meta recommends staying under 150,000 splats for performance.
