Niantic Spatial was formed in May 2025 when Niantic sold its consumer games portfolio to Scopely and refocused the remaining company on geospatial AI. The spin out was capitalized with 250 million dollars, 200 million from Niantic's balance sheet and a 50 million dollar strategic investment from Scopely. Founder John Hanke moved from chief executive to executive chairman in March 2026 and Inhi Cho Suh became chief executive, with Brian McClendon staying on as co founder and chief technology officer. The company organizes its products into Reconstruct, Localize, Understand and Capture.

Scaniverse is the capture product and the most widely used consumer Gaussian splat scanner on iOS and Android. It is free, reconstructs on device, and publishes captures to a shared map. Scaniverse Cloud came to Android, moving heavier reconstruction off the handset, and USDZ export arrived, so a phone capture reaches a simulator or an Apple platform without a conversion step. Niantic Spatial also ran the Scaniverse SplatYourWorld challenge as a near global community contest judging real world reconstructions.

SPZ is the reason Niantic Spatial's work reaches software it does not own. The company released the compression format under MIT, shipped SPZ v4.0, and third party tools carry it, including Postshot, which added SPZ v4 export alongside spherical harmonic degree capping. SPZ underpins the Khronos KHR_gaussian_splatting_compression_spz extension, and Niantic Spatial joined the Khronos Group to work on open standards for Gaussian splatting and geospatial 3D.

The Large Geospatial Model is the research programme behind all of it, trained on more than 30 billion posed images accumulated through years of consumer scanning, and the Visual Positioning System is the localization layer that model feeds. A partnership with Spexi connects drone capture to city scale Gaussian splat reconstruction, which supplies the aerial half of a dataset the phone captures cannot reach.

Robotics is where the reconstructions get consumed. A Niantic Spatial reconstruction exports as a single USDZ against the NuRec specification, which NVIDIA's Isaac Sim 6.0 reads directly, and a joint project with the humanoid robotics company Flexion trained an RGB only navigation policy inside one such reconstruction in Isaac Lab and transferred it zero shot to a physical robot, deriving the collision mesh with MVSAnywhere.
