Niantic Spatial, Inc. was formed in May 2025 when Niantic sold its consumer games portfolio to Scopely and refocused the remaining company on geospatial AI. The spin-out was capitalized with $250M — $200M from Niantic's balance sheet plus a $50M strategic investment from Scopely.
The company's flagship Gaussian Splatting product is Scaniverse, a mobile capture app that has become one of the most widely used consumer tools for splat capture on iOS and Android. Niantic Spatial also contributed the SPZ compression format (MIT-licensed) that underpins the Khronos KHR_gaussian_splatting_compression_spz extension, and is building toward a Large Geospatial Model trained on 30+ billion posed images.
In March 2026, founder John Hanke transitioned from CEO to Executive Chairman; Inhi Cho Suh became CEO. Niantic Spatial also joined the Khronos Group to help drive open standards for Gaussian Splatting and geospatial 3D.
